Xplorer: Adam Kenworthy

Adam Kenworthy, shown in 2005 while on a National Outdoor Leadership School mountaineering trip in the Himalayas, is planning on embarking on a fundraising bike ride across the country after his May graduation from Colorado State University.

Age: 21

Occupation: Student at Colorado State University, studying natural resource and recreational tourism

Born/raised: Des Moines, IA

Current residence: Fort Collins

When and why did you move to Fort Collins? I moved here for school four years ago. I chose Fort Collins because it is such a cool town and has great access to the outdoors.

Outdoor passions/adventures Mountain biking, road biking, rock climbing and snowboarding. Has been trekking to Mount Everest base camp in Nepal, spent a semester on a Himalayan mountaineering trip to India and spent a semester interning as a surf guide in Nicaragua, after which he learned to surf and speak Spanish. After graduation in May, he will embark on a 4,000-mile, 75-day cross-country bike ride to raise funds for Big City Mountaineers (http://akusa.blogspot.com/)

Wildest outdoors experience? While in the Indian Himalayas, I had just made it back to camp. I hiked off to dig a hole and go to the bathroom. Just as I was finishing up, I heard a crackling noise. I opened up my jacket thinking that it was my avalanche transceiver, but the noise wasn't coming from that. All of a sudden my coat and pants started crackling and I felt my hair stand up on end. Then it hit me that I was about to get hit by lightning. I pulled up my pants and started jumping, thinking that if I was struck and wasn't grounded I would be better off. I took off running to camp and made it to my tent. My friend said that I looked like I had seen a ghost.

Most memorable outdoor experience? Being at Everest base camp with my Dad

How many miles a week are you riding? I will be riding 200 to 300 miles a week. I will probably up the mileage in April.

Why the fundraiser route to the trip? This ride is something that I have wanted to do for a few years. In the back of my head I knew that I wanted to raise money for a good cause. Then one day I saw an ad for Big City Mountaineers and it clicked. I had some pretty rough years growing up. I found that being outside was the best thing for me early on. I want to give some teens the opportunity to experience the outdoors. I am trying to raise $5,000 dollars. That will be enough to send 12 teens through the program.

Worst job? Cleaning dishes at a restaurant.

Childhood ambition? To open up a skate park or be a professional hockey player

If you could invite someone to dinner, who would it be? Either Richard Branson or Ed Viesturs

Something about you that most people don't know? At age 4, my parents threw me on a bike and I just started riding with no training wheels.

Something you'd like to do before you die? Sail around the world

One outdoor activity you'd like to take up? Mountaineering

One outdoor activity that doesn't interest you in the least? Snow blading (using really short skis)
