Day 22: More Bad Weather

So some good news, last night we got our hotel for free last night. Why you might wonder, the reason being ants. Last night we discovered aunts running around our room, so due to john's persistence, they gave in to us for a free room. So we had that going for us on the start of the day. We left Fargo late, we were waiting for the wind to shift which was expected to take place around noon giving us a tail wind. We left around 11 so for the star of our ride we had 10 15 mph headwinds with light rain, about an hour into the ride the winds did shift giving us a nice push from behind. Then a shift took place again once again giving us a head wind. So as the ride drew on the skies got darker and the lightning and thunder grew more consistent. Then finally about 30 miles in the sky's and mother nature unleashed an assault of rain and hail on us. the hail was about fingernail size and blowing sideways at us. We both broke into kind of a crazy laughter acknowledging the situation we were in and the fact that we were still 10 miles away from any sort of cover. The people driving by us kind of slowed down as they drove by, some of them wide eyed in disbelief and others simply shaking there heads. So we finally made it into Waupton and found cover at a gas station, then continued on to the super 8 next door deciding to throw the flag in for the day. The only other options for continuing on would be to head towards the storm for another 50-60 miles to the next town, which wasn't going to happen. Once we arrived at the hotel the front desk clerk asked us if we had seen the tornado, no we responded, well there was a reported tornado that touched down 10 miles east of here about 20 minutes ago. Me and John were about 3 miles of Waupton when the tornado was reported. So that was a little sketchy. So I am a little irritated with the weather we have been having lately hopefully it will give us a break soon so we can continue on. The hotel fees are starting to add up we have been staying at more hotels than either of us were planning on. We were talking today about carrying a jar of aunts with us so maybe we could let them loose in our room and get the hotel rooms for free. So from here we are heading straight south hope to be at lake Okoboji in Iowa in two days, that means 2 120 mile days, we'll see

Miles biked today: 45

Miles biked total:1700

Hey once you get on to good old IOWA soil the weather will be perfect. ANother option for you is to try and check out "Couch surfing" You never know- at least it would be free and maybe a good meal or 2. May the tailwinds be with you!!! Mom

Kendizzle!
Nice work brother, you seem to be about relatively half way-ish. You guys are logging some serious miles, pretty impressive. Seems like a great ride, wish I was there. Seeing those pictures of open roads gets me all teary eyed. LA has really hampered my road biking on open road status (I almost die from cars daily). Good thing you have a rational person to ride with because if that was us two at that gas station in the headwind, our stubborn asses would have just kept going. I just want to say keep on keepin on because you really are an inspiration for a lot of people, showing them what getting big truly is (aka 'the deal'). Happy early birthday, hope you get to rock out your own bed after several adult beverages. Good luck and I'm rooting for you. Remember life's a garden, dig it.

We ended up not making it to Atlanta to see the Tanis clan thanks to the lovely buddy pass system. Perhaps we were meant to see you in Des Moines on your birthday instead!

Uncle Wayne says remember to pee downwind!

Hugs and kisses,
AUNT Kris (ants are the bugs)

hey Adam- I am so jealous that you are in Okoboji (or at least went thru Okoboji!) It sounds like you are having so much fun minus the weather. Let me know when you are gonna be near DC! Miss you and enjoy the ride!!!

Love ya!
